Council
to hold BBQ and Funday
Coventry families are invited to a fun day and BBQ at
the city council's Leasowes Nursery in Green Lane on
September 3rd. The event has been planned to mark the
official opening of the blooming sensory garden, a project
that has been developed by people with disabilities
to lead a more independent life as part of the People
in Action service.
The fun kicks off at 10am with games and a bouncy castle,
a baloon artist, music and raffle prizes. There will
also be a showcase of talents of garden workers to include
music, arts and crafts. With the help of donations,
supplies and services from Barclays, Oakleaf Landscapes
and other contributers, work began on the sensory garden
in 2004.
Cassandra Clifford, fundraising and marketing manager
for People in Action, said, "The work that People in
Action do varies by service user, as we look at the
individual and not the disability." "We do not fret
over disability, but look at the ability of a person.
We help individuals to grow in confidence and self worth
in the way that the nursery grows plants and flowers."
She
explained the work done at the nursery gives many people
a sense of purpose and a sense of accomplishment that
is sometimes forgotten. She said,"The sensory garden
at Leasowes can be very therapeutic and beneficial to
many service users.
The
nursery provides support to the learning disabled community
as a whole". People in Action is a registered charity
and has been working in Warwickshire and the West Midlands
for 20 years.
They
now have over 50 homes, assist more than 130 service
users, and have approximately 250 staff. Based in Bedworth,
they work throughout Warwickshire and Coventry to provide
a full range of support and services to adults with
learning disabilities and started their gardening project
at Leasowes in 1998.
